So, I want to start a social training party thing....for us clowns!

The idea is to make a regular social get together, in the spirit of clowning. To practice, play, do drills, put together acts, clown around, and just hang out, and have a good time.

So i am turning to you, the clowning community, for some input.

1. How often do you think it should be? monthly? semi-monthly? weekly?

2. Where should it be held? I can probably find space for it in the Vulcan, but i wonder if that is the best venue for it, it might be nice to have it where people can venture out and interact with an impromptu "audience" aka, people on the street.

3. When should we have the first one?

Lemme know!

San Francisco/Bay Area Clowns?

I'm curious if anyone out there would be interested in joining me for random acts of street clowning.
Nothing formal, no pitch, no "show", just going out there and interacting with people.
Whenever, wherever, with or without props.

Random clowning is one of my favorite things to do, though I haven't actually done it on the street yet.
A la: http://robertshields.com/video.html

I figure it's good practice for character development and may have the potential to seed routines.

I am of the school of thought that as a performer if you interact with someone it should be in a way that will make others laugh with you and wish you would interact with them, rather than be relieved that they're not your victim and avoid eye contact. I'm looking for people in the same class.

This is a call to circus and theatrical clowns.
If you are strictly children's entertainment we probably won't be a good match, but feel free to contact me anyway if you're interested.

Send me a private message.

Happy First of May

First of May, All Clowns Birthday

Did you know that All Clowns are born on May first?

It's true! According to tradition, all clowns are born on May first, which is the reason why a rookie, or beginner clown is known as a "First of May."

Some believe that the tradition of "First of May" may have begun with Joseph "Joey" Grimaldi. Others believe that it begun with the American circus. Which ever is the truth, it is an important holiday for clowns.

Here's a bit of background on First of May.

First, here's Joseph Grimaldi.

Joseph Grimaldi was an innovator, his performance as Joey introduced the modern clown to the world. Today he is known as the father of modern clowning.

Joseph Grimaldi was the original 'Clown Joey', the term 'Joey' being used to describe clowns since his day. Of his own name he punned 'I am grim all day - but I make you laugh at night!' Grimaldi became the most popular clown in pantomime, and was responsible for establishing the clown as the main character in the Harlequinade, in place of Harlequin.

His style of clowning had its origins in the Italian commedia dell'arte of the sixteenth century, but in the popular Harlequinades of the early nineteenth century he emerged as the founding father of modern day clowns. He died in May 1837.

Second, here's the second theory. The month of May was traditionally the time when circuses made their season run, thus rookie clowns are known as "First of Mays." May being the beginning of the warm months was an ideal time of the year to launch the circus season, which ran through the summer months.

Today, circuses may begin their run as early as January, and end in December, but one thing is constant, clowns continue to be born on May first.

Please join me in wishing all clowns a "Happy First Of May."

If you are a clown, remember to celebrate your special day.

We, clowns, deserve, need, and earned this special day.

I invite you to revive this tradition by celebrating May first as "All Clowns Birthday." It maybe us who will be remembered as the one who made it possible for “First of May” to become a National holiday, even an international celebration.

We can do it.

I'm a self-confessed coulrophobic - and I'm trying to conquer my fears the only way I know how - by photographing them.

I originally was going to dress models up as clowns and photograph them - but that's not right. I want REAL clowns to photograph.

I'm willing to travel (within the UK) to get to clowns to photograph them. So if there's a troupe the more the better!

I'm based in London and can be contacted at polstarphotography@gmail.com

If you're interested either contact me on Tribe or email me.
Thanks for reading this
I currently have acquired a medium sized warehouse, and would like to converted in to a circus skill share location. I would like some advice and suggestions. Such as, building, safety, and efficiency. We are thinking mirrors, spanish web, and trapeze.

Any feedback would help.

Hiya, my name is leah, wishing to invite everyone to visit engage and participate in a new tribe called
mask magic, this involves the painted face - for believing that the magic we are discussing is about wearing
a face, a character placed over the skin, than can be taken off, and put on again.... the development of
performance around masks, how it feels to wear a face and be seen by others, the reactions, the magic and tribal mystery behind
making and wearing masks... endless adventure indeed,
look forward to seeing you there

Clowns help Iraqi refugee children overcome trauma
for any external internet sites. The views expressed are the author's alone.

DAMASCUS, Syria, December 27 (UNHCR) – Red noses and silliness have popped
up in recent months at UNHCR centres across Damascus, bringing some laughter
and happiness to young Iraqis suffering from the traumas of life as
refugees.
The UN refugee agency first learnt about the positive benefits of clowns
when a local troupe was hired last World Refugee Day (June 20) to perform in
the tense and unhappy waiting room at the main UNHCR Registration Centre in
Damascus. UNHCR clerks noted that the children were more relaxed during the
registration appointment.
Three people came forward when UNHCR put out a message that it was looking
for Iraqi clowns to perform a regular show at the registration centre as
part of its "Back to School" campaign for young Iraqi refugees. They became
UNHCR's first outreach volunteers from the Iraqi community.
UNHCR asked the independent international group, Clowns Without Borders, to
review the first show, which focused on informing parents and children that
all Iraqi children have the right to attend school. Clowns Without Borders
returned in November to offer further training to the clowns, and welcome
laughter therapy for UNHCR, Syrian Arab Red Crescent and UNICEF staff.
"We know that one in five refugees that register with UNHCR are victims of
violence or torture in Iraq," said UNHCR Representative in Damascus Laurens
Jolles. "This means that many families, particularly children, are
traumatized when they come to us. The clowns offer a rare opportunity for
parents and children to smile during the otherwise very difficult experience
of registering with UNHCR."
At a community centre in Seida Zeinab, one of the main Iraqi refugee areas
in Damascus, a crowd of children burst out laughing as two clowns squirted
each other with water and made flowers out of balloons.
"It was beautiful," said Rodeen, a beaming smile covering her face during
the show. After the show the young Iraqi girl returned to her place hiding
behind her aunt's legs.
For the three Iraqi clowns, members of the multi-ethnic, multi-religious
Baghdad-based Happy Family Group, the main goal is to make children laugh.
Their members are now spread across the region, living as refugees. One
colleague was killed in Iraq.
"We're doing this to make the children happy in order to remove the fears
and memories of bombs and bad days," said Rahman Eidi, one of the clowns.
"We also want to teach children about the importance of school."
The clowns perform a daily show at the UNHCR Registration Centre. They then
spend a couple of hours supporting UNICEF and Syrian Arab Red Crescent
colleagues who staff the Child Friendly space at the centre. Several times a
week they perform at community centres, offering a rare diversion for many
refugee families. This also helps to bring families into the centres to
learn about other services offered by UNHCR.
Clowns Without Borders leader, Christina Aguirre, spent time getting to know
Iraqi children in order to help design the shows for the clowns. After one
show at the Seida Zeinab Community Centre, she and the Iraqi clowns went out
to meet children begging on the streets or selling goods to earn a few extra
pennies for their families.
"I have to work," said 14-year-old Ali, manning a little stall full of jams.
"We need the money to live." His education will have to wait, he sighed,
when asked about school.
"When you see an Iraqi child in the street here, all you see are a lot of
problems, and no happiness," said Aguirre. "But when we put on our red noses
and play with them, they forget their problems for a little while."

I'm totally open to adding books, subtracting books, & making it even more awesome. It's not so much about "my" favorite clown books as I wanted to make a list of a bunch of great clown books in general ...

THE CLOWN CONSERVATORY
AT CIRCUS CENTER SAN FRANCISCO PRESENTS
CLOWN SOUP
JUNE 13TH - JUNE 17TH, 2007

What:
The Clown Conservatory at Circus Center San Francisco presents its 2007 graduate performance of its brand new show Clown Soup. An evening of original contemporary and classically inspired absurdity and physical comedy, Clown Soup stars the 2007 Graduating class of the Clown Conservatory at Circus Center San Francisco. The Clown Conservatory, founded in 2000, is the only year-long professional theatrical and circus clown training program in the United States.

Directed by Joan Mankin and Paoli Lacy, Bay Area theatre and circus luminaries, Clown Soup represents the culmination of a year's training and preparation at the Clown Conservatory. Following in the grand traditions set forth by the original Pickle Family Circus, the show highlights the acrobatic, musical, juggling, and slapstick skills of the class in a series of solo, partner and ensemble vignettes.

William Hall founder of BATS Improv and Fratelli Bologna says: "I laughed so hard my stomach hurt! This is a great opportunity to see some of San Francisco's best new physical comedians before they become huge."

When:
June 13th - June 16th

Showtimes:

JESUS CHRIST+JESU KRISTE+YESHUA HAMASHIACH+JESUS CHRISTUS+JESU KRISTU+ISOUS HRISTOS

Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophesy and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near. REVELATION 1:3

And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth." REVELATION 11:3

He who testifies to these things says, " Surely I am coming quickly." Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus! The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. REVELATION 22:20-21

+++

Everyone, has the responsibility to find the truth for themselves. What is stated below, must be researched and verified, so that every individual can then decide to accept, or discard it as myth. The only truth is God the Father, the Son our Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Read the Bible, pray to the Holy Spirit for guidance and our Lord Jesus Christ will not abandon you, but will place the truth in your heart.

+++

We must not try to copy the world, but be different to it, as the example set by our Teacher, our Lord Jesus Christ. Being the same as the world, sharing its base values, being part of the fashion trends, is all part of Satan's system (Sex changes that are taking place ever more frequently and therefore not knowing anymore who is a man or a woman). The Pope of Rome is one of Satan's instruments (the Papists have immense power and wealth, our Lord Jesus Christ was humble and owned nothing). Talmudists/Zionists want to rebuild Solomon's Temple and proclaim their own false king of the world (there is only one King of the Jews and Orthodox Christians and that is our Lord Jesus Christ). Their power base is the U.S.A (Superpower of the world). They contol many governments, banks, newspapers, television stations (the media in general), etc. We must not forget the very elusive and cunning Masonic Lodges which form part of Satan's means to spread anti-Christian and heretic information. Television and video has been one of the most powerful tools of Satan, which has ruined the ethics which sustained our youth and the family unit. With pornography in all its forms, men have been misled and subsequently their women, a whole generation of our youth and their families have been devoured by Satan. We have forgotten about God, the Bible and prayer and have allowed ourselves to go down the road to hell and have fallen into Satan's trap (in other words we are slaves to flesh and our desires). Hedonism is the aim of humanity.

The group that is attempting to rule the world, consists of three member countries, U.S.A, Europe and Japan (3 presidents). Their central control, consists of 32 members (of the 29, 8 are Americans; 9 from Japan; 12 from the European Union (contolled from Belgium/Luxembourg). Head of the 3 member group is Rockefeller (his head quaters is in Rhodes, Greece; his specific influence is in the U.S.A and E.U). Whoever does not obey the orders of this group are murdered. Death is the penalty for disobedience. Another Satanic "club" is called, Bildeberg. They can destroy any government and put a new one together again. They can make a country vanish and create a new one too. 200 members, which include intelligence agencies (CIA; BIA; BND (Ger.); SIB (Ital.); SPELA (Fra.)). There are members who are involved with NATO and hold important positions in the US administration, etc. They hold an extremely harsh stance against the East, especially with Russia because of its Christian Orthodox heritage. They exterminate/demolish any opposition.

An enemy going back thousands of years is head quatered in China (the Himalayas/Tibet). The Seljuks come from that region, who are the ancestors of the Turks, who attacked and oppressed Christian Orthodoxy in Asia Minor and Greece. The Turks/Jews have tried many times to wipe out the Greeks and Christian Orthodoxy. They call the Greeks and Christian Orthodoxy, the people of the "Blue Trigramaton" (which is refering to the Holy Light that emenates from our Lord Jesus Christ's tomb). The roots of martial arts is that region spoken of above. Martial arts are Satanic and anti-Christian and yet has our youth spellbound under the innocent guise of sport/fitness. In the Himalayas there is a glass pyramid (Sambala), it has many entrances. This is where the White Brotherhood is based. It's aim is to destroy all the world's religions except its own. It has more power than the U.S.A. It has more resources at its disposal than all the governments in the world. It has infiltrated and controls many governments and religions (Roman Catholics, Protestants and Judaism). The First and Second World Wars were masterminded by them. They are going to start the Third World War too. The White Brotherhood works with the Bildeberg club and all the others. They are assisted by the Zionists. They created Hitler and introduced the Swastika (broken cross, that is what it means). Hirohito of Japan was responsible for a massive bloodbath, but he was not punished like the others, after the Second World War because he was a member of the world ruling 3 member group mentioned above. Grey Wolves (Turkish Muslims), are connected to the White Brotherhood. Only Grey Wolves members may rule Turkey. They must always mantain a harsh stance against Greece/Christian Orthodoxy (Turgut Ozal, was exterminated for his softer stance).

The White Brotherhood want to destroy the followers of Jesus Christ. They call His followers, bipods or two-legged ones. Their methods are many: thirst, hunger on a worldwide scale. All plants and forests must be destroyed. Wars, so as to ensure maximum slaughter. They refer to humanity as a chicken breeding farm. They destroy humanity with drugs; they have contaminated our drinking water (it has been doctored with medication); our food is also contaminated and our clothes too from the fancy washing powders that we use (that is why everyone is getting ill and they don't know why). Thirst on a worldwide scale, for eg.. Euphrates to be dried up because of Turkey, which will lead to a confrontation with Iran/Syria. Hunger, for eg., Russia was the world's wheat provider, even the U.S.A relied on her. The White Brotherhood ensured that Russia would starve. In Moscow young women give themselves for a plate of food. Homosexuality, the U.S.A being its banner. One can go on and on, but there will be no end then. It is devestating. But do not despair, if you are a follower of our Lord Jesus Christ because He has defeated Satan and the world.

(This is a summarized version and a translation of a tape recording in Greek, from a Greek Orthodox perspective ofcourse, given to me by a Monk at Calvary/Golgotha in Jerusalem, Christmas, 2001. I cannot divulge any names, nor my own because this is a very dangerous subject. You will have to verify the truthfullness of the matter yourself. Please excuse my errors of spelling or other. May God forgive me if I am wrong about any of this, but I do it with honest intentions. God bless you. From a humble follower of our Lord Jesus Christ.)

"These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." JOHN 16:33

Hi,
I have a spot reserved in the How Berkeley Can you BE? parade~ and I would like to perform along side a group that allready has worked together. Perhaps, at least 3 or 4 other people. I just want to have fun and I can work around your act.

This is to perform and parade this Sunday Sept. the 30th. I would really like to perform and I allready have some Puppets and masks created and ready to go. another option is, if you have allready signed up for the "how berkeley" parade, I can cancel my registration if I have to and join you.

I have paraded in alot of protests... at Burning Man, and with Bread and Puppet theater in Vermont, (through and internship) and more...
I am a percussionist / puppeteer / performer/visual artist who is working more clowning and dancing into my performances.

here is a link :
www.myspace.com/summerhilltribal --------music
www.myspace.com/hoptripsoundscape

i have lots of ideas, and can improvise quickly. We could meet once or twice before and then parade at the end of the month.
I have some people who can show up and be extra hands but it would be GREAT to accompany someone who allready has a group, costumes and act together.
My troupe from this summer has moved there own ways now that fall has started, then I got sick, and now.... The show must GO on. : )
I am trying to use the spot I have reserved and ... I just want to have fun parading.... I would like to throw a puppet mask on... then dance and clown around. Please reply soon, as we should meet up this week or next and I need to contact the Parde people w/ changes.

some Options and possibilities:
dancing, acting, clowning, stilts, juggling, flags waving and spinnning, poi juggling, sorry no fire allowed in this specific parade, (not sure why)
I can make an animal costume... like on Fellini's CLOwns, the traditional 2 person cow or horse

and here are puppets and masks I allready have----- www.davidavidson.artistportfolio.net
davidavidson@gmail.com

I would be so happy if you helped me and I could help perform. I allready paid the fees for the parade and everythiing.

Sincerely, David Davidson

Call to street performers in Brooklyn

ArtsInBushwick.org

We're looking for individual performers and troupes to perform at Maria Hernandez park after a parade through Bushwick on Saturday June 2nd. We are also accepting any and all types of performers for different venues throughout the weekend. Register at ArtsInBushwick.org

Artists and residents of Bushwick are creating the Bushwick Open Studios & Arts Festival to bring to light the hidden aspects of Bushwick.

Breaking with the past and taking inspiration from the self-organizing structure of Web 2.0, the event and its planning is open to anyone who wishes to participate. Currently, more than 80 artists and community members are involved in planning and producing the event. The festival is an open and inclusive event that benefits the entire community by sharing artistic projects and encouraging community interaction and dialogue.

Walking or driving through the industrial area of Bushwick, you might miss the hundreds of artists working in the area’s lofts. The Bushwick Summer Arts Festival brings these artists and performers out into the streets and into view of each other, other community residents, and the general public. The community organizers hope to inspire a diverse group of participants, such as local high school students, car art painters, and a variety of musical groups, to share their work in an open, welcoming and inclusive forum. Organizers are working with local businesses, nonprofits, and arts organizations, which may provide venues, create events, or offer funding. Some volunteers are planning interarocess itself. The June 07 event will be amazing, but equally important is what’s happening right now. By coming together to plan a creative event, people are connecting and collaborating, thereby strengthening our community.”

Artists and organizers are available to talk about their plans and process.

Last year, more than 120 artists participated and hundreds more community residents and others attended the event. This year the organizers expect even more participants. New activities this year will include more performances, more outdoor events, and a series of facilitated discussions and panels. The panels will focus on the past, present, and future of the Bushwick community, the role of the arts in Bushwick and other neighborhoods in New York City, and the question of gentrification and sustainability in our community.

The festival is organized by a group of volunteers under the name Arts in Bushwick, and in cooperation with other area nonprofits and businesses. This is the third Bushwick Open Studios event since 2005, but the first to be organized by Arts in Bushwick.

Register at ArtsinBushwick.org

modern roving circus/commedia troupe

hey all

i'm a theatre artist/designer based in toronto, with a grand idea about getting a group of people together on a regular basis to do what i call a parade of fools. i would like this to have elements of commedia in it, as well as circus, modern dance, and hardcore "performance art".

so there would be performers/dancers dressed up in otherworldy & stylized costumes, clowns, and stylized characters (not necessarily from the commedia stock, but with that kind of comedic grotesque absurdity). there would be stiltwalkers, musicians (like a marching band, they would wear their instruments). i picture this troupe roaming and doing contact improv & purely improvised dance. then they would be able to stop and have little "scenes" where two or more performers would play; i am interested here in engaging in oral and physical, BUT nonverbal play. so no text & no language, but sound and movement. i see this as being a way for each performer to express something truthful from inside, something that can't come out in the restricted form of textual dialogue.

this idea came from seeing the white procession at burning man in 04, at dawn by the temple, where two of them were playing... one with a parrot puppet and the other with an umbrella, both of them creating music via beatboxing & vocally/physically improv'ing together.

does anyone get what i'm talking about? can anyone suggest how to use commedia dell'arte or circus (and specifically clown) characters, style, or history to make this idea happen? does anyone already have this idea or have a group actually doing it?

cheers, thanks,
amira

Hi and thanks in advance for your interest in this survey. As a member of the San Francisco Circus Center’s Clown Conservatory class of 2007 I am required to do a research project. In general, there is not much written on the history of circus, and the research projects are an attempt to begin to enlarge the library of information pertaining both to the past and present. I’m looking towards the future, and would like to begin to break ground to bring recognition and respect to alternative circus and clowning- aka “cirkus” and “clowning”. Feel free to answer the questions below with as much or as little information as you see fit. You do not have to answer all of them (but please give me at least one name). Be honest, tell me off, tell clowns off, tell klowns off, whatever you want. Please send a private message with your answers, and feel free to forward to any and all that might be interested and willing to participate. Thanks, Cynthia

Would you be willing to come to the San Francisco Circus Center on Tuesday January 2 in costume? You would not be required to perform an act, but if you wanted to that would be great. I will be choosing one person, provided that at least one of you is willing.

Need One Non-Speaking Performer for Late Night Show 11/4

Still casting one role for the upcoming Crash Cabaret. (www.crashcabaret.com) The theme is "Vote or Cry." I am curating an environment outside the theatre and need 1 non-speaking improviser. There will be a speaking actor on a soapbox pontificating the "issues" on our mock ballots. The non-speaking actor will hold a sign for one of the issues, either pro or con. The other sign holder (already cast) will hold an opposing sign. The sign holders rarely speak but agree or disagree in an exaggerated physical manner, sometimes with the soapbox actor and sometimes with each other. There are lots of opportunities for slapstick here.
There may be a little bit of pay, or you can get up to 4 comps.

The show begins at 11:59 pm on Saturday night, November 4th and ends at 1 am. These roles are for the preshow. Call time is 11 pm, go time is between 11:15 and
11:30, and you are done working at midnight, after which I hope you will stay and watch the show.
There will be a short rehearsal (an hour and a half to two hours) the day of the performance, time and place TBA.

Please reply with email and phone number if interested.

Thanks!

➢	Fit the clown nose
➢	Cut the clown nose
➢	Paint and finish the clown nose
➢	Prepare and fit the elastic and string.

One great thing about the leather clown nose is they do not sweat like rubber or latex and they have a much more natural look than rubber. To see examples of Stanley's mask and nose work please go to www.maskarts.com.

Hi,

This is a general call for any young aspiring clowns that would like to be part of a
new circus clown project currently running in South Florida.

The project is aimed mostly towards people that are just getting their feet wet and wants
to be part of a mentoring process that will introduce them to different circus skills,
interaction with a live audience, and Clowning.

This would be a great opportunity for that kid you know that lives next door and all he or
she can talk about is being a circus clown and practices incessantly for hours.

Please forward this to those that may be interested

You can email me off list at

or leave me a message at:

If you're in the New York Area

The New York Mask and Clown Workshop presents
Master Teacher Mario Gonzalez

Master Commedia Dell'Arte Mask and Clown Teacher, Mario Gonzalez, former principal actor with Le Theatre Du Soleil and Master Mask Teacher at the Conservatoire National Superieur D'Art Dramatique in Paris, comes to New York for the first time! This work is designed for professional actors and other performers, yet it also appropriate and useful for teachers, directors, therapists, and others who work with the public.

We will offer two intensive workshop sessions:
June 26 - 30, 2006 from 6 - 10 pm and
July 5 - 12, 2006 from 2 - 6 pm

Taught throughout Europe, this highly structured yet flexible technique has three stages:
LE CHOEUR ("Chorus") is an exercise that develops the essential techniques later used for character work. Using a neutral mask that covers all but the eyes, the actor discovers the tremendous expressive potential in the most basic movement and becomes acutely aware of extraneous or habitual physical patterns and postures. The actor learns to neutralize his personal "character" so that when he or she takes on a role, there is a fresh beginning and the possibility of complete transformation.

This exercise helps the actor to master SPATIAL AWARENESS * TIMING * LISTENING * CONCENTRATION * ECONOMY OF MOVEMENT * SPONTANEITY * PRESENCE * CONTROL OF THE AUDIENCE

Second, in LE NAISSANCE ("Birth"), Mario leads the actor to create a character using masks from the commedia dell'arte tradition. He does not look for strict historical representations of the commedia characters in terms of period or physicality. Instead, he helps the actor find the essence of the classic personalities in characters that emerge from his or her own experience. This supports Mario's focus on training the actor to be specific, present, and decisive in his actions. The NAISSANCE opens whole new avenues of creation, often with stunning and unexpected results. Actors become virtually unrecognizable when their own Harlequins, Pantalones, Captains, and clowns are born.

In the third stage, Mario leads students in IMPROVISATION with texts, songs, props, and interactions with other characters. Through this work, Mario helps each character develop a clear voice, distinct physicality, and presence on the spot.

The workshop atmosphere is relaxed but rigorous. It trains you to be fearless in the face of vulnerability; to use whatever happens -- mistakes, accidents, laughter -- to strengthen your presence and connection with the audience.

You will develop acute attention to detail and clarity of intention. The technique is applicable to all styles of acting; it is so solid and comprehensive that it will remove stress and enable you to do your finest work.

"Through the mask, a character will emerge and take the actor on extraordinary adventures." - Ariane Mnouchkine

"If you can do this, you can do anything." - Mario Gonzalez
Schedule, Rates, and Location

Clowning can be a wonderful, lifelong career: today good clowns are
much in demand in the US and around the world – in circuses, but also
in theaters, in corporate events, in hospitals, in schools, and every
place where laughter is needed…

Cirk-O-Six New Years in LA

ANON SALON’s SEA OF DREAMS “CIRK-O-SIX”

New Years Eve, Downtown LA
This New Year's Eve, San Francisco and LA based event promoters, ANON SALON are expanding on the long running success of their legendary SEA OF DREAMS New Year's Eve spectacle by raising the bar with this year’s CIRK-O-SIX, to be held at the historic Los Angeles Theater. This year’s burlesque theme combines the party with ongoing theater performances in the famed downtown theatre.

The Los Angeles Theatre was once considered one of the four or five finest theatres in the world and the event will raise the flag of the new Renaissance of downtown Los Angeles and call upon the Golden Era of LA’s Downtown Theatre District where vaudeville and burlesque used to fill its resplendent theatre houses. Anon Salon will bring the history alive with today’s most cutting edge, avant garde performance and burlesque troupes performing in this breathtaking theater with a surrounding labyrinth of party rooms containing Anon’s live and DJ musical favorites.

The theatre built in 1931 in the French baroque style of Louis XIV, was a virtual Hollywood cathedral. Famous for its huge crystal fountain in the lobby, not an inch of the interior was left undecorated from the elegant stage curtains and ornate balcony to the intricately-carved ceiling of its lobby. When the Los Angeles Theatre was about to go under during the Depression, Charlie Chaplin paid an exorbitant amount of money to keep the posh 1,967-seat theater afloat, so that he could have the grand premiere of his masterpiece "City Lights" there. When downtown LA was abandoned for other new neighborhoods and nightlife, the Los Angeles Theatre closed and had been sitting idle, except for occasional film shoots.

Cirk-O-Six will then merge this experience with its audience base of costumed revelers to create a unique and participatory evening of entertainment.

Additionally, there is a full art gallery space attached to one of the downstairs ballrooms that will house a large art exhibit of cirque and burlesque themed works curated by Mike Russek, co-founder of Transport Art Gallery and founder of the Six Degrees Art Festival.

Lighting and an interactive environment will also be created by Los Angeles event and décor wizards, The Do Labs.

PERFORMERS

On the theatre stage:

The Buxoticas of Lucha Va Voom
Buxom * Exotica * Buxotica
Lucha Va Voom is the hot new ticket from LA, combining burlesque, comedy and costumed classic “super hero” Mexican wrestlers. Lucha Va Voom has toured the country recently selling out 2 nights at the Mayan Theater in Los Angeles and invited to perform at the annual Comedy Festival in Las Vegas this year.

Lucent Dossier
Exo- glAmour Shenanigans
Full production over the edge performance art troupe specializing in vaudeville and circus shenanigans with visionary costuming and unique choreography and mesmerizing dance.

Cirque Berzerk
Cirkus for the MisLed
Cirque Berzerk has recently been producing the dinner/cirque experience combining their cirque performances with a 4 course dinner at Abundant Sugar in the Brewery Art Complex. They also produced several events and hosted their large circus event at Burning Man 2005 under a 90 ft circus tent. Performers from Cirque du Soleil join their ranks.

Skin
Aerial performance combining multi media with live/electronica.

March Forth
High-energy, eclectic and mobile unit of good times, taking a Fellini-esque mix of Mardi Gras mayhem, afro beat, Mexican hustle, sultry samba, big band accompanied by their surrealist troupe of stilt-dancers and costumed beauties, they are the new love-party paradigm.

Live music from
Rosin Coven (Music from the Pagan Lounge, Burning Man)
Gooferman (KloWNifIED Chop-Hop)
HISTORY OF ANON SALON

ANON SALON, over the course of its 15-year existence, has helped redefine West Coast event production by producing hundreds of unique theme parties, theater festivals, art shows and even street fairs for Burning Man fans in both San Francisco and Los Angeles. The company was born out of San Francisco’s alternative art and performance scene of the 1980’s. From the beginning, they helped shape an ever-growing community of multi-media artists and event producers into a network of non-commercial, unadvertised one-off events and large public gatherings. Unlike conventional concert, club or theatrical events, these one-off gatherings were specialized one-of-a-kind theme party/events. Production laden and technologically cutting edge, they included not only music, but also performance artists, installation, lighting and video artists, theatrics and unique décor, that quickly began to attract an audience that brought their own ideas to the mix. The evolution of their party spectacles has always reflected the changing face of the creative community. As their website asserts, "ANON SALON teases technology, embraces the arts, and flirts with the unknown. … It celebrates all that's eclectic and electric in art, design, and media providing a place to grab new ideas before business as usual turns them into formulas.
Anon founders, JOEGH BULLOCK and MARCIA CROSBY have been central to San Francisco's alternative and underground art scene since the late 1970's. Besides ANON SALON, their endeavors include the GlasHaus parties of the mid-1980's, Icon Byte Bar and Grill (the first Internet bar and cafe in SF), the award-winning Climate Theater, the world famous Solo Mio performance festival. More recently, Joegh has co-created and co-produced San Francisco-based Burning Man Festival parties such as Flambé Lounge and the Decompression Heat the Street Faire.

In the early 1990's, they joined forces with then actor/director MARK PETRAKIS, known as “Spoonman” (from his popular alternative vaudeville revues called “COBRA LOUNGE”). An early web developer, already a part of the burgeoning technology scene, Petrakis was also responsible for Telecircus.com, a 1994 San Francisco arts community website that provided the first web presence for Burning Man, the Residents, Clubfoot Orchestra and many others.

Artist, event producer and social provocateur, MARK BAVA from the Monterey and San Francisco Bay Area entered the mix further bringing together audiences from communities from Humboldt to San Diego. Bava is also one of the founders of the LA Burning Man LaDecom Street Fair, Oracle Milleneum and the Blue Bongo nightclub in the Artist District of Downtown Los Angeles.

LA partner and co-producer, Stephen Samojeden is an east coast transplant who got his start in event productions in Colorado in the early Nineties. Working with friends he helped create Sol Productions, which grew to be one of the largest event production companies in the state. More recently he has helped create dozens of alternative art events in the Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles areas, including the yearly Los Angeles Burning Man Decompression Street Fairs.

Since its debut on NYE 2000, their SEA OF DREAMS event has been known as the must-see sleeper event for the in-the-know “cultural creatives”, attracting over 3,000 attendees each year to the sold out San Francisco events and last year’s LA event.

This New Year’s Eve, the ANON team will once again combine their talents and experience in the raising of Cirk-O-Six.

Just curious, where did people begin working on clown? What styles, what costumes, periods, etc?

I'm from the LeCoq/Fo school of buffoon and red nose clowning. I also work with the European traditions of the classic hirearchy of whiteface/auguste.

I came upon this article in the New York Times about the Mayor of Bogatå hiring mimes to reduce crime. Seems that the New York Times is making it okay to use the M-word again. That's three articles that make mention of mimes this week.

Don't have concrete dates yet, but this man is a living genius in the physical theater realm. His clown work is brutally funny. Brutal to learn but funny to watch.
If anyone can swing this, I heartily encourage it!
Hoping to find a mime that lives in LA to make a few rehearsals before we head out - also must have good sence of humor and enjoy physical comedy as we are looking for a mime to come start a mime act and then get beat up (stage fighting only of course) by a drunk and irate clown........
anyone?
check us out at www.cirqueberzerk.com or here on tribe!

Commedia dell’Arte training opportunity

Hi, I'm posting the following on behalf of a friend...

As most of you know, I am currently overseas as the resident assistant for the “Accademia dell’Arte” in Arezzo Italy. The reason I am writing to you is this:

The Accademia’s director has told me to spread the word that is they are offering a “steep discount for qualified applicants” for the upcoming Spring 2005 semester.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I want to get the word out about the program and also get as many folk over here as possible before word gets out about it.

This is the Accademia’s first year of classes and they are starting at the top with some of the best professors, maestros and programs in the world!

I HIGHLY recommend the program and am trying to stay on here as long as possible. The training is intense and engaging. The classes are amazing: Italian language (a must), Commedia dell’Arte, German Mask, Acrobatics, Chech Theatre, Tanz Danse, Italian Storytelling (Cantastoria), Theatre Philosophy, Improvisation, The theatre of Carlo Goldoni (taught IN Venice!), Voice... more that I can’t remember right now...

All of the classes are much more than what their name implies. Each time a teacher leaves, it is like we are saying goodbye to family. They stay at the villa when they teach and the students get the opportunity to talk to them outside of class, ask questions, get gelatto downtown... It’s terrific!

If there is any way you can get here, DO IT!

The Spring semester runs from:
January 14th to April 30th, 2005.

Tuition is normally over $13,000 and worth every american penny! The possible “steep discount” only applies to students for the spring semester, so get on it! You can get university credit through your school or the University of Memphis, and also student aid, scholarships and grants.

The tuition covers classes, housing, meals during the week (Monday breakfast through Friday lunch) and when special workshops are taking place.
The Accademia is housed in a GORGEOUS tuscan Villa in the hills of Central Italy, surrounded by history and culture.

For more information about the program, check out the website:
http://www.dell-arte.org

If you want to read about the classes so far in Italy, check out my “Italian Adventures”:
http://nerdbunker.com/nerd_ramblings.htm#Adventure

There are two videos from the semester so far:
http://nerdbunker.com/animations/firstmonth.mov
http://dell-arte.org/media/secondmonth.mov

Feel free to email me with ANY questions you may have, and PLEASE pass this on to anybody/everybody you know.

Thank you! I will see some of you soon!
