hey all
i'm a theatre artist/designer based in toronto, with a grand idea about getting a group of people together on a regular basis to do what i call a parade of fools. i would like this to have elements of commedia in it, as well as circus, modern dance, and hardcore "performance art".
so there would be performers/dancers dressed up in otherworldy & stylized costumes, clowns, and stylized characters (not necessarily from the commedia stock, but with that kind of comedic grotesque absurdity). there would be stiltwalkers, musicians (like a marching band, they would wear their instruments). i picture this troupe roaming and doing contact improv & purely improvised dance. then they would be able to stop and have little "scenes" where two or more performers would play; i am interested here in engaging in oral and physical, BUT nonverbal play. so no text & no language, but sound and movement. i see this as being a way for each performer to express something truthful from inside, something that can't come out in the restricted form of textual dialogue.
this idea came from seeing the white procession at burning man in 04, at dawn by the temple, where two of them were playing... one with a parrot puppet and the other with an umbrella, both of them creating music via beatboxing & vocally/physically improv'ing together.
does anyone get what i'm talking about? can anyone suggest how to use commedia dell'arte or circus (and specifically clown) characters, style, or history to make this idea happen? does anyone already have this idea or have a group actually doing it?
cheers, thanks,
amira

Re: modern roving circus/commedia troupe
Fri, May 19, 2006 - 1:54 PMhey amira,
have you talked to Sahar's roommate, Laura. She is a dancer and I think maybe you worked with her on a contact dance project. She has wanted to do something like that from a dance perspective fora while. Also, durring the solstice walk through Kensington in the winter, I have been part of a cloud parade who also did some security stuff. I believe you contact the Kensington market community association. If I was in TO i'd be right interested, it sounds intriguing
be well,
anna

Re: modern roving circus/commedia troupe
Sat, June 10, 2006 - 9:09 AMOne way to approach it is to break down the basic "storylines" and iconic character interactions of Commedia.
There are athousand books and articles out there.
Then you assign a commedia character to each performer.
Then practice practice practice.
For me, this only a suggestion, I would start out redoing every good Classic Commedia play.
Of course, you would drop the straight translation for live performance, you wouldnt need it by then. you are so brilliant ;-)
In doing strict translations, you will have 'informed' your collective spiritual/physical core.
Giving yourselves a compassed exploration of somewhat virgin territory.
Plus the stories allow individual performers the opportunity to confront challenging
communication and social/personal obsticles.
Ones that might be avoided in a free for all improv practice,
are encountered and =in your face= explorations of avoided issues will yieId gold mines of solutions.
For what is contact imrov if not a direct confrontation of what makes one uncomfortable? -

Re: modern roving circus/commedia troupe
Mon, June 19, 2006 - 12:42 AMCommedia dell'Arte is more about the characters, their relationships and the circumstances they find themselves in rather than plays or texts. Your idea would be great with CDA characters.
It sounds like a great amalgam of Commedia, Cirque du Soleil and classic clowning.
Keep us up on the process!
If you have any questions about CDA, there's a great yahoo group more than willing to answer anything you might have. -

Wed, June 21, 2006 - 12:19 PMhey all,
thanks so much for the input and ideas. i think the way to go would be for each clown to explore a character and interpret. the lazzi structures would be an ideal place to start - yes i need to read them.
i have been distracted & waylaid by costume design projects and working for the $$ over the past months - i've done some street clowning with north (we went grocery shopping in chinatown as decrepit old people, i'll try to put a picture up in the tribe's photos) and have met some other folks who want to do this, but i haven't made the time for it.
research, research, research.
any ideas on how to conduct a first meeting of such a parade of fools?
how do i get on the yahoo group?

Fri, November 10, 2006 - 3:56 PMthat sort of spectacle theatre is totally cool!
I am very interested in your process on this and how it works out. I have had something similar percolating in my creative consciousness for a while. I am in chicago, if I can help with anything please let me know!! -
